How can I reduce the number of hang ups?

If you’re seeing a high percentage of hang ups, you’re not alone. There are a few common reasons this happens—and several simple tweaks that can help.

First, what counts as a hang up?

In Upfirst, a call is treated as a hang up when:

  • The call is under 15 seconds, or

  • The caller never says anything

👉 You’re not billed for hang ups. These calls are free.

Some portion of hang ups will always be wrong numbers or dialer bots, and there isn’t much to fix there. But if you’re seeing more hang ups than you’d like from real customers, try the ideas below.

1. Shorten your greeting

If the greeting is long or feels scripted, some callers will hang up before they hear how you can help.

Consider a shorter, clearer greeting. For example:

“Thanks for calling ABC Company. I’m the team’s AI assistant. I can answer questions and schedule appointments. How can I help you today?”

This gives callers context quickly and reassures them they’re in the right place.

2. Tell callers what the AI can do

Some callers still expect old-school phone trees that don’t understand natural speech. They might not realize they can just talk.

Use your greeting to set expectations:

  • “I can help answer questions about services and pricing.”

  • “I can schedule, reschedule, or cancel appointments.”

  • “If I can’t help, I’ll take a message for the team.”

When callers know what’s possible, they’re more likely to stay on the line.

3. Try a different voice

The voice you choose matters. Some voices sound more natural or more familiar to your callers.

You can experiment with:

  • Voices that sound more conversational

  • Voices with accents that match your local area or customer base

If you serve a specific region or community, a voice that “sounds like home” can build trust quickly.

4. Give customers time to adjust to AI

AI phone agents are still new for many people. Some callers will hang up the first time simply because they’re unsure what to expect.

Over time, as your regular customers learn that:

  • The AI understands them

  • It can actually solve their problem

  • They don’t have to wait on hold

…hang ups often decrease naturally.
